The best economy SUVs are certainly not the least expensive like one might expect, but they are the vehicles that give you more bang for your buck. When compared to others in their segment, they traditionally have lower sticker prices, but still provide something that makes them stand out, such as a stronger engine, better towing abilities, generous cargo space, a roomier rear seat or more standard features.

Starting the list of best economy SUVs is the Chevrolet Suburban Three-Quarter Ton SUV. Although some consumers may look at a base MSRP of $44,155, and have a hard time seeing the value, once the feature are explored, it is easy to understand why it is a top-recommended choice. A powerful 6.0-liter V8 engine can tow up to 9,600 pounds, making it the best in class. It receives four out of five stars in government crash tests, and can haul nine passengers. It also blows the competition away, when it comes to cargo capacity, providing 137 cubic feet of usable space behind the front seats.

Next is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class G63 AMG SUV. It offers a strong 5.5-liter V8 engine that delivers 536 horsepower and returns 12 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway. The vehicle stands 6-foot-4 and has 8 inches of ground clearance. Surprisingly, with this height, there is minimal body roll. The brakes are exceptionally effective, helping the vehicle stop from top speeds without a wiggle. As you would hope, the list of features is extensive, but at an MSRP of $134,300, it's sort of expected.

Another one of the best economy SUVs is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class G550 SUV. With its tank-like presence, luxurious cabin and massive power coming from its V8 engine, it is easy to see the value in the $113,000 MSRP. Its 4WD system can go virtually anywhere, while five passengers are cradled in comfort in an award-winning cabin. Do also checkout the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class GL550 SUV.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 SUV offers old-school luxury. It manages to strike a balance between boulevard comfort and trail-busting capacity. Ample leg and headroom, top notch materials and a surprisingly comfortable ride quality earn it a place on the list of best economy SUVs. The Land Rover Discovery LR4 gets an honorable mention.

Lexus LX SUV is next. A surprisingly low MSRP of $81,530 comes with both around-town composure and a generous amount of off-road capabilities. Seating for eight is ample, and a gutsy V8 paired up with a full-time four-wheel drive system provides fast acceleration and fantastic towing abilities.

The 2013 BMW X5 is another one of the best economy SUVS. It includes a massive list of standard features starting at only $47,500. It is composed on the highway and offers seating for five, although an optional third row bench does add two small seats.

Next is the BMW X6 M; this is truly a vehicle that will turn heads on the road. Seating for four, phenomenal handling and prodigious power make it a more practical alternative to a sports car. It also offers unparalleled braking abilities, taking just 107 feet to stop from 60 mph.

Finishing off the list of best economy SUVs is the BMW X5 M SUV. If you are looking for blazing fast acceleration, comfortable seats, astonishing handling, fantastic crash test ratings and impressive braking abilities, then this is the vehicle for you. Starting at only $88,850 the X5 M is sure to satisfy. With its twin-turbo 555 horsepower V8, self-leveling suspension and long list of standard features is sure to catch the eye of even the most frugal shopper.
