While around-town crossovers are great for some consumers, there are others who need a vehicle that's roomy enough to comfortably seat at least seven passengers and powerful enough to tow a moderate to heavy load. These are SUVs people turn to who have a large family or small business that demands a generous amount of cargo capacity, and these are certainly the ones to turn to when you need to tow a boat in style.

Starting the list of best large SUVs is the Chevrolet Suburban, an American icon. Here you get the powerhouse capabilities of the Chevrolet Silverado with seating for nine passengers. You really can have the best of both worlds. A heavy duty V8 can tow up to 9,600 pounds, yet the vehicle offers a cabin as refined and comfortable as some luxury SUVs.

"Confident, capable and comfortable" are the three words used to describe the Ford Expedition. Control Trac 4WD provides sure-footed traction regardless of terrain while the thoughtful suspension delivers a smooth ride whether you are on a smooth or uneven surface. An integrated trailer brake controller is a strong selling point for those with a load to tow.

Although no longer in production, the Dodge Nitro still holds a position on the list of best large SUVs. Its brawny image and considerable towing capacity makes it a coveted selection, if you are willing to put forth an effort to find one. The good news is that 2011 models leased for 2 years will be turned in soon and available.

Next is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. An optional air suspension allows you to raise the ride height from a low 6.6 inches up to 10.7 inches for serious off-road abilities. It is available with two engines, and three different four-wheel drive systems are optional. From excellent crash test ratings to a roomy rear seat to a well-trimmed cabin, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a vehicle that has it all.

When one thinks of a large SUV, they often picture the GMC Yukon. Seating for up to nine passengers is granted with plenty of space, and everyone enjoys a smooth and quiet ride, regardless of terrain. The 320 horsepower V8 is one of the most preferred and respected engines on the road, offering a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. The cabin is attractive and the navigation system is one of the easiest to use on the market; it even includes digital music storage.

Next is the Yukon's twin, the adored Chevrolet Tahoe. It also seats up to nine passengers and boasts the same trusted engine. A key feature to appreciate is the Autoride suspension; this offers air-assisted load-leveling and variable shock dampening, which are two things that really come in handy when towing a heavy load.

Certainly one of the most attractive vehicles on the list of best large SUVs is the Nissan Armada. A powerful V8 can tow up to 9,000 pounds with ease, and the available All-Mode 4WD responds to changing road capabilities in an instant. A favorite feature is the Nissan Intelligent Key, which recognizes the driver and adjusts the mirrors, seat and pedals accordingly.

Next is the Mitsubishi SUV, available in selected markets in both petrol and diesel engines. It offers plenty of safety features to be a family hauler, but impressive enough off-road capabilities to attract the adventure enthusiast. It's comfortable, powerful and perfect for anyone who gets the occasional urge to find a little mud.

For aggressive off-road capabilities and distinctive styling, you can't beat the Toyota FJ Cruiser. This five-passenger vehicle offers a simple but comfortable cabin, with rubber floor covering and water-repellant upholstery that isn't afraid to get a little dirty.

Finishing up the list of best large SUVs is the fully redesigned, stunning and family-ready Nissan Pathfinder SUV. A strong and fuel-efficient V6 engine, roomy third row and abundance of optional features make this a preferred pick.

Although Land Rover Range Rover, Volkswagen Touareg and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class did not make the list, they are all worthy of a glance as well.
