BMW X6 SUV Review
SUV Reviewer
The BMW X6 SUV is a crossover SUV with the sleek "coupe-like' styling of a four-door sedan with sweeping roof lines that suggest an aerodynamic feel and high speeds. Yet the BMW X6 SUV strives to maintain all the characteristics that are expected in an SUV with an elevated ride height, rugged styling and all-wheel drive. Its sporty styling still do not mask a tightened suspension system and communicative steering that enable this vehicle to perform and handle better than a coupe at top speeds.
There are two trim levels for the BMW X6 SUV: the xDrive35i and the xDrive50i, that match the available engine in the vehicle. The xDrive term is a reference to the all-wheel drive system that is standard equipment in the BMW X6 SUV. The xDrive35i includes as standard equipment bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a tilt-and-telescopic steering that is powered, sunroof, memory functions for the driver seat, front seats that are powered ten ways and an audio system with 10 speakers, CD player and adapters for the iPod and USB. Added in the xDrive50i trim level are front seats that are adjustable 14 ways, real-time traffic, and a navigation system with voice controls.
The BMW X6 SUV seats four but has an optional rear seat that can increase the capacity to five passengers. The engine in the BMW X6 SUV xDrive35i is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six cylinder engine that can produce 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy for this model is rated at 16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined. The engine in the BMW X6 SUV xDrive50i is a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 with a production of 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy for this model is rated at 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg combined. Both models come with four-wheel drive and automatic transmission in eight speeds as standard.
As to be expected from a BMW, the interior of the BMW X6 SUV has a sporty and cushioned design that is well put together highlighted by the use of high quality materials. The rear seats find themselves with two inches less headroom due to the sloping design of the roof which also serves to reduce the amount of cargo space available. With the rear seats up, cargo capacity is an adequate 25 cubic feet while putting down the rear seats increases the capacity to only 60 cubic feet as compared to the 75 cubic feet that are available in the X5.
Despite its size and weight, the BMW X6 SUV performs outstandingly well, with an impressive cornering ability that comes from a balanced weight distribution and an immense number of electronic features in its all-wheel drive system. Both engines provide brisk acceleration and braking power is equally as strong. The ride is extremely comfortable as road and wind noise are kept to a minimum in the cabin and the suspension is able to accommodate all road imperfections with ease.
