The Chevrolet HHR is considered a wagon with a retro styling design. It stands out among wagons of similar design with new safety features that include antilock brakes, stability control and side curtain airbags. It offers a comfortable ride and superior handling as well as a spacious and versatile interior. An SS model is available for those wanting a sportier drive as it is equipped with a sport-tuned suspension and turbocharged engine.
The Chevrolet HHR is a four-door wagon that seats five and is available in three trim levels: the LS, LT and SS. The base model is the LS and comes with air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control, a front passenger seat that folds flat, keyless entry, OnStar, full power accessories and an audio system with six speakers, CD/MP3 player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack.
The LT trim of the Chevrolet HHR is a midrange model that has two different styles: the 1LT and the 2LT. The 1LT includes remote start, a power driver seat and upgraded 16-inch wheels. The 2LT adds fog lights in the front, 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, a steering wheel wrapped in leather with audio controls, running boards that are color-keyed and a Pioneer audio system with seven speakers, subwoofer and Bluetooth connectivity.
The SS model of the Chevrolet HHR has the basic audio system of the LS but its sporty features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a turbocharged engine, a sport-tuned transmission, interior trim with two tone design and front sport seats and unique exterior styling details.
Specs:
The engine in the Chevrolet HHR depends on the model. The base model LS and midrange 1LT have a 2.2 liter four cylinder that can produce 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The 2LT comes with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine that can produce 172 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. This engine is an option for the 1LT model. All models of the Chevrolet HHR have front wheel drive and the LS and LT models provide a choice of a five-speed manual transmission which is standard or a four-speed automatic which is an option.
The engine in the SS version of the Chevrolet HHR is a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that can produce 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque with the standard five-speed manual transmission. The optional four-speed automatic produces only 250 horsepower and 222 pound-feet of torque.
Fuel economy for the Chevrolet HHR is based on the engine and transmission with the 2.2 liter engine rated at 22 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined and the manual transmission rated at 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined. The ratings for the 2.4 liter engine drop somewhat to 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg combined. The turbocharged engine is rated at 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg combined with the manual transmission and 19 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
The Chevrolet HHR provides 63 cubic feet of cargo space with folding down the rear seats and the front passenger seat.
The drive of the Chevrolet HHR delivers mixed performance with a cushy ride over rough roads but harder to handle when more power is required. The 2.4 liter engine seems to provide a more energetic ride that resolves some of these issues and makes for a more comfortable driving experience.
