Chrysler Pacifica SUV Review

The Chrysler Pacifica was an interesting blend of vehicle, what Chrysler called the "sports tourer". It combined the attributes of a wagon, minivan and sports utility vehicle with a handling that outperformed most typical people-movers and the ability to seat six comfortably with a folding third row that provides the cargo space of more like that of an SUV. It provided a stylish design with great attention to detail and was discontinued in 2009.

The Chrysler Pacifica was available in three trim levels: the Base LX, the Touring and the Limited. Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive is an option available for all models. The base LX model of the Chrysler Pacifica provides air-conditioning with two zones, 17-inch steel alloy wheels, keyless entry, ten-way power front seats, full power accessories, two rows of seats for five passengers and a stereo system with AM/FM radio and CD player. The Touring model adds three rows of seats for six passengers, fog lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, automatic temperature control, and an upgraded audio system with satellite radio.

The Limited version of the Chrysler Pacifica added a power lift gate, 19-inch chromed aluminum wheels, rear-parking assist, leather upholstery, front and second row seats that are heated, memory for the driver seat, wood trim and an audio system with eight speakers, a six-disc CD/DVD changer that could play MP3 files and a variety of DVD formats. Other options available for all models included an entertainment system with a video screen in the rear, a premium surround sound system, a navigation system with back-up camera, xenon headlights and Bluetooth technology.

The engine of the Chrysler Pacifica for the Base LX model is 3.8 liter V6 that can produce 200 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. It comes with an automatic transmission. All-wheel drive models, including the LX, Touring and Limited, have a 4.0 liter V6 that can produce 235 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. These models have a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.

Fuel economy for the Chrysler Pacifica is the same regardless of engine type and drivetrain and was rated at 14-15 mpg in the city and 22-23 mpg on the highway.

The interior of the Chrysler Pacifica was relatively upscale with a well-appointed design. The base model LX had two rows of seats and could hold five passengers while the Touring and Limited models had bucket seats in the second row and a third row that expanded the seating accommodation to six. The first two rows of seats provided ample space for the passengers while the third row was somewhat cramped and best suited for small children. Ergonomics were well thought out with controls that were easy to locate on the seats and door with rear controls for ventilation and audio functions. The amount of cargo space depended on the model, with the Base LX providing 92 cubic feet and the Touring and Limited models providing 80 cubic feet.

The handling of the Chrysler Pacifica was more like that of a car than a minivan or truck-based SUV. Steering is solid and precise and bumps were felt less with the larger V6 engine than with the smaller one. It also had better acceleration and pickup and made the Chrysler Pacifica an excellent vehicle for transporting the family around town or on vacation.
