Performance

Drivers wil have the choice of three fantastic engines in the 2013 Ford Edge SUV. A 3.5-liter V6 engine is standard, producing 253 pound-feet of torque and 285 horsepower. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are also standard, but you can opt for all-wheel drive instead. This is a sound engine, with a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, yet it still manages to return super fuel economy at 19 mpg in the city and a very impressive 27 mpg on the highway. This is more than impressive for a vehicle in this segment.

The Edge Sport is equipped with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that awards 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. An all-wheel drive Edge can accelerate zero to 60 mph in a quick 7.5 seconds with only a small decrease in fuel economy.

Those concerned mostly about gas mileage will want to explore the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that is available on all models, except the sport. It still offers plenty of power at 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.

Handling is solid, secure and composed. The Sport is surprisingly agile and sharp, but the larger wheels do compromise the smooth ride just a bit.

Technology

• SYNC: Available with or without MyFord touch, SYNC gives you hands-free communications, entertainment and more. A 4.2-inch screen lets you hear calls, listen to text messages and enjoy your MP3 player. You can completely customize it for your needs.
• Intelligent Access: Why fumble with your keys in the rain? You can get in your vehicle and start it just by having the key in your pocket or purse.
• Audio System: The Sony audio system is standard with a rear subwoofer, 12 speakers and 390 watts of power. If you add on the HD radio, broadcasts and music are crystal clear.

Other technology features worth mentioning include SiriusXM traffic, speed sensitive volume and optional rear view camera, cross traffic alert and collision warning.

Safety

The Ford Edge Sport can stop from 60 mph in 122 feet, which is well better than average. Also, when tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it was rated as “Good” in roof-strength, side-impact and frontal-offset crash test, which is the best rating awarded. Interestingly though, in government crash tests, it was only awarded three out of five stars in frontal-protection.

The Ford MyKey system is standard for 2013, which allows parents to set speed and stereo volume limits for teenage drivers. A collision warning system can be added to Limited, and a Vision package can be added to certain trims, which include cross-traffic and blind spot warning systems. Standard safety features include:

Appearance

Appearance wise, the 2013 Edge is the most modern looking of all Ford’s sport utility vehicles. The sporty styling is not overdone, so it can appeal to a driver of any age. Metallic paint and privacy glass highlight the chiseled lines while the handsome five-spoke wheels add a finishing touch. Interestingly, although there are five spokes on all rims, each trim boasts a variation in design. A curved fascia, body colored bumpers and chrome grille balance the rear spoiler off nicely.

Comfort

Five-passenger seating is awarded in the 2013 Edge, but these are not just any seats. You will find that you sort of melt into them, yet they offer enough support that you won’t feel achy on long trips. Also, even the outboard seats in the rear recline and have significant legroom. That being said, the middle seat is not winning any awards and headroom is a little limited, if you add on the “Vision Roof” option.

The cabin is made with a three-screen display to use for inputting commands for navigation, phone and audio functions. Some will find that the buttons are a little challenging to identify when you are actually driving.

Cargo

The Edge both excels and fails when it comes to cargo. With rear seats in place, you are granted 32 cubic feet, which is huge and much better than many crossovers and even large SUVs. However, when you fold the rear seat down, you are only granted a total of 69 cubic feet. It should also be noted that the seats don’t fold all the way flat either.
