GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD SUV Review
SUV Reviewer
The GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD is a well-equipped large truck-like SUV with features and amenities close to the Denali model of the Yukon. Weighing in at more than 250 pounds heavier than the standard Yukon, the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD is styled somewhat differently to distinguish it from the other models. To counter the added weight, there is an aluminum hood and bumper beam in the front and a more prominent air dam. The upper grille is expanded and the lower grille is smaller with openings that would normally be available for tow hooks and fog lights blocked off. The running boards along the side of the vehicle are designed for improved aerodynamics and in the rear, the tail gate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass. The tail lights use LED bulbs rather than standard bulbs. The wheels are also more aerodynamically efficient and have lower rolling resistance. A tire inflation kit replaces a full spare tire and jack, with those items being optional. The overall effect is to reduce drag and improve fuel economy.
The GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD comes in base and Denali models. The base model includes cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, passenger and driver front seats that have six power adjustments, manual adjustable lumbar support, and height adjustment with multi-level heating available for the driver only, bucket front seats made of leather, cruise control, power and heated mirrors, tilt-adjustable steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, a navigation system with rearview camera, and an audio system with nine speakers, AM/FM radio with CD and MP3 player, separate rear audio and adjustable speed sensitive volume control.
The Denali model of the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD has all the features of the base model but has 20-inch chrome alloy wheels and adds a leather and wood steering wheel, eight power adjustments for the passenger and driver seats with power adjustable lumbar support, and a ten-speaker audio system with surround sound. Options for the Denali model include rear entertainment and a blind zone alert.
Specs:
The engine in the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD has a 6.0 liter V8 with 16 valves and variable valve timing with an electric drive system contained within the transmission that can produce 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a four-speed automatic with a rear-locking differential. Fuel economy for the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
The interior of the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD features thinner front seats than found on other Yukon models which serve to add more space for the second row of seats. Their comfort is the same as the standard seats. Also featured in the interior of the GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD is a special tachometer and an economy gauge. The tachometer can display when the engine is running on electric power and the economy gauge can be used to provide more efficient driving. The navigation system can also display the power flow in the system so one can determine if the power is coming from the electric motors, the gasoline engine or both.
The GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD is still a powerful vehicle that can transport up to eight people yet provides much better gas mileage than the other models in the line.
