GMC Yukon XL 2WD SUV Review
SUV Reviewer
The 2011 GMC Yukon XL 2WD is a vehicle for those who want everything big. It's a full size SUV and a full size family vehicle. Nine full size people can fit comfortably in the GMC Yukon XL 2WD seating arrangement. At three tons this is a large vehicle, not necessarily one made for city dwellers. Yet if you and eight of your closest friends want to take a week long camping trip through the most rugged terrain you're permitted to drive on then this is definitely the vehicle to take.
The GMC Yukon XL 2WD is extremely spacious. With the three rows of seats (of which the third comes as a standard feature and requires no upgrade) it's quite spacious for nine people. While taking out the third row of seats means storing it somewhere, it's worth the effort when you open up the 137.4 cubic feet of cargo room. This is the strongest and most viable argument for purchasing the GMC Yukon XL 2WD.
Interior aesthetics have improved over the years. The design quality and the higher quality finishing trim allow for more of an upscale trend. Previous generations have offered the trim in a cheap imitation design which was anything other than appealing.
Special features include standard and optional equipment that includes third row entertainment system in addition to the second row entertainment system. Alloy wheels ranging from 18 to 22 inches, heated seats for the second row, power fold down second row seating. Dual zone climate control helps to keep everyone comfortable while the power lift gate helps to ensure that there is safe packing before the trip.
Perhaps one of the greatest arguments against purchasing the GMC Yukon XL 2WD is the gas mileage. As expected the highway eats through fuel like a hungry wolf giving the Yukon XL only 15 miles per gallon in the city and about 20 on the open road. Loaded with cargo or hauling will drive down the fuel economy ten fold. Many of the GMC Yukon XL 2WD vehicles don't make it into the teens or even the double digits when they are loaded with heavy cargo and towing. This can make the vehicle particularly expensive to use.
The GMC Yukon XL 2WD is about 18 feet in length. This is a significant amount of vehicle for today's roadways. Slinking into a parking space or trying to maneuver through some of the tight city corners can be highly problematic. Yet at the same time when it is driven under the intended circumstances there is a nice road feel to the driver and a quiet ride. For such a large vehicle it does handle rather well when it has the space to function as it was intended to.
Stability control and antilock disc brakes are standard on every model. Along with the latest OnStar upgrade, the GMC Yukon XL 2WD also has full side curtain airbags, airbags for the front passengers, and an optional blind spot alert system. The rigorous 2011 safety testing was not applied to the Yukon. By the traditional standards the Yukon won a clear 5 star rating for safety.
