Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUV Review
SUV Reviewer
Many reviewers are saying that the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUVs are very different from the previous generations of Wranglers. With the six speed manual transmission. the added horsepower and torque make even commuting fun and the better fuel consumption makes running costs all the more affordable. Problem is those crazy off-roadies who head for the rocks, rivers and ranges within hours of splashing their cash and tearing away from the Jeep lot. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUVs all have new Pentastar engines that take the rugged off road vehicle up to street sedan performance standards. It is quicker, less thirsty, and more agile on the street but still in its element when fording rivers and scaling the heights. The new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUVs are designed to give a more comfortable everyday ride and appeal to a more affluent buyer than previously. The most important innovation is the availability of a 4-door model, which appeals directly to the outdoorsy family driver with a need for extra passenger space and carrying room. The Unlimited is half a meter longer than the standard, yet its boot capacity rises to 2,320 liters. But there is no mistaking it for anything but a Jeep's distinctive looks.
'New Heart Same Soul' is the strap line for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUVs. The new heart is a Pentastar V-6, a 4-cam aluminum block base engine. It gives 285 bhp at 6400 revs per minute and 260lbs a foot of torque at 4800 rpm on regular unleaded petrol. Rough terrain is where it was made for, with 4 easily removed doors, fold down wind shield, flexible top choice, including a hard top to match the body, flared fenders, round halogen headlights and that distinctive 7 slot grille. Also available are heated front seats, internal environment control with cabin air filtration, finger tip audio controls on the steering wheel, 12v accessory outlets, 115v (150w) AC power inverter, chrome auto gear shifter and automatic headlamps. The 'Jeep Trail Rated' badge is only found on all wheel drives that perform well in a number of grueling test drives specially set to prove all terrain capability in the most arduous of situations. The 5 test classes for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUV as for all 4 by 4s are traction, ground clearance, water fording, maneuverability and articulation. Safety is assured with multistage front and side airbags, a robust body-on-frame design and build, energy absorbing steering wheel, column, front rail tips can be serviced after low-speed collisions, and the built in restraint system with 3 point lap and shoulder belts for all seating positions, pre-tensioners and load limiting retractors on the up right portions of the front seat plus the essential off road proven emergency brake system.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUV, and very functional with a good size cargo space, sedan like ride quality, and maybe even improved resale value. Nearly two thirds of Wrangler sales are currently the Unlimited. However whichever model you choose you will wonder if you might have better off with the other. The very first time you need to carry extra tools or more than usual monthly marketing you will wish you had the Unlimited. As the demand for more fuel efficient, urban street friendly SUVs increases, discovering a genuinely rugged mud skimmer is becoming more difficult with each design round. The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SUV is a good compromise.
