Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel SUV Review
SUV Reviewer
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel is a full-size luxury SUV with a diesel engine that provides muscular torque, a manageable drive and lower fuel economy for a vehicle of its size. It handles the urban road with ease with turns that are barely discernable due to the standard air suspension and all-wheel drive. All seven seats have equal comfort in space, safety and other features with little reason to complain, even for those seated in the third row.
Standard features on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel include automatic headlights, adaptive air suspension, roof rails, sunroof, automatic climate control with two zones of comfort, automatic wipers, air conditioning, front seats with eight power adjustments, vinyl upholstery, walnut trim, the COMAND electronics interface, third row seats that have power split and folding capabilities, 20-inch alloy wheels available in several designs, Bluetooth, and an audio system with eight speakers and an six-CD changer in the dashboard with an auxiliary audio jack.
One premium package for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel provides enhanced features of power-folding mirrors, a power lift-gate, a rearview camera with a compass integrated into the system, additional memory functions for the front seats, a hard drive based navigation system, driver side and interior mirrors that auto-dim, voice controls, storage for digital music, satellite radio and interface for the iPod. Another premium package adds a keyless ignition and entry and a Harmon-Kardon surround-sound audio system.
The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel has a full leather seating package which changes the upholstery to leather, and has comfort headrests and ambient interior lighting. A lighting package consists of adaptive bi-xenon headlights with washers and LED daytime running lights. Optional features are running boards, parking sensors, and front seats with ventilation and massaging capabilities.
Specs:
The engine in the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel is 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6 that meets all 50 states' requirements for clean diesel technology. The engine can produce 210 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a seven-speed automatic with all-wheel drive and a four-wheel electronic traction system. It can go from zero to 60 mph in 9 seconds.
Fuel economy for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel is rated at 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined.
The interior of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel is well-appointed and luxurious. Exceptional support is found in all the seats with sufficient head- and leg-room in all three rows of seats, with the third row of seats able to fir two adults comfortably. The maximum amount of cargo space for the vehicle is 83 cubic feet of space.
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Diesel is an economical vehicle to drive with enough power to drive around town easily and efficiently. Despite the diesel engine, it is one of the quietest vehicles to drive. Handling corners might be somewhat soft for those who are looking for more sportiness in their vehicle, but this one handles the road in general much better than some of its larger truck-based vehicles. Its weight is evenly distributed, making for a smooth and effortless ride.
