If anyone is looking for a rugged SUV that makes little sense for practicality, but offers the advantages that come with vehicles built for the military then the GL Class from Mercedes would be right up their alley. Even the supercharged Mercedes-Benz GL Class G55 AMG SUV offers little in terms of usefulness during the daily commute. That being said, the indestructible nature of this vehicle makes it a great choice for those headed on off-road adventures. It even moves faster than anyone would expect from a mammoth vehicle like this. That doesn't mean it handles the way most drivers would like.

There is nothing sleek and sexy about the Mercedes-Benz GL Class G55 AMG SUV. In all appearances it is obvious that the vehicle was made to handle anything that combat could throw at it. While Mercedes attempts to add their own style to this SUV to make it more appropriate for consumer use, it doesn't detract from the size and unyielding look that it comes with. This can be a benefit when tackling roads and terrain that is less than forgiving, but the daily commute will never benefit and the heads that turn will be in wonder instead of awe.

The cabin of the Mercedes-Benz GL Class G55 AMG SUV is a confliction of emotions. The features available and the quality of the materials used adds a luxury that is common with the Benz. However, the placement of controls and lack of legroom makes it more awkward than comfortable for everyone including the driver. If cargo hauling is the name of the game then this vehicle can certainly measure up, but most people will find being inside it a chore than is less than pleasing. That said, few of the bumps and bruises of the road will be felt inside the cabin. The sturdy nature of the build keeps what is outside from affecting those who are inside.

The biggest surprise from the Mercedes-Benz GL Class G55 AMG SUV is the speed it can achieve. Considering its behemoth size, the acceleration and continued speed it offers shock most who see it. Past that, the drive will be less than thrilling. Handling is off, steering is difficult and it can be a chore to maneuver virtually anywhere. It was designed to head off the beaten path and that is where it truly shines in performance. Off-roading is simple and effective. It just doesn't make much sense on the main highways.

The engine of the Mercedes-Benz GL Class G55 AMG SUV is what offers up the power and speed that it attains. This trim is complete with a supercharged 5.4 liter 500 horsepower V8. That is then mated with a five speed automatic and four wheel drive as standard. It reaches sixty miles per hour in a little over five seconds, but it blows through the fuel as it does. This vehicle only achieves 11 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway. It is difficult to get much worse than that.
