Mercury Mountaineer SUV Review

SUV Reviewer

The 2011 Mercury Mountaineer is a mid-sized SUV with a spacious interior for medium-sized families, good ride quality, decent handling and some off-road capabilities. Its truck-like chassis construction has been enhanced with more standard amenities, a softer suspension and all-wheel drive instead of the traditional four-wheel drive. These additional features have served to place the Mercury Mountaineer amongst the higher-level mid-size SUVs. The vehicle offers excellent towing capabilities which make it a good choice for those with more demanding needs out of their SUV.

There are two trim levels for the Mercury Mountaineer, the Base and the Premier. Features for both levels are plentiful and include a heated windshield, illuminated entry, adjustable pedals and a keyless remote entry with the Premier level adding rear parking sensors, heated seats, leather upholstery and the multimedia integration system which is Sync voice-activated. Other options include a navigation system that can display current traffic conditions, prices of gas at local stations, sports scores and movie listings and a rear entertainment system with DVD player. There is an optional third row of seating which can make the second row seats captain's chairs and reduces passenger capacity from seven to five.

Specs:

There are two engine options in the Mercury Mountaineer, one being a 4.0 liter V6 that can produce 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque for the Base trim with a five-speed automatic transmission and the other for the Premier being a 4.6 liter V8 that produces 292 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque. The transmission can be the five-speed automatic or an optional six-speed automatic. Both engines are available with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Fuel economy for the Mercury Mountaineer is dependent on the combination of engine and type of drive. Models with two-wheel drive and the V6 engine are rated at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway while the two-wheel drive and the V8 engine are rated at 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive models are rated at 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with V6 engine and 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with the V8 engine.

The interior of the Mercury Mountaineer comfortable and well-appointed yet filled with low-quality plastic that is more in line with the truck-like utility of the vehicle. The Base version of the vehicle accommodates five and the Premier model has a third row seat that is power folding and increases the passenger capacity to seven. The third row is surprisingly spacious yet the seats could stand to be somewhat softer.

The ride of the Mercury Mountaineer is smooth and the vehicle handles well due to the independent rear suspension. The additional third row seat makes this vehicle popular in its class as a family vehicle and is one of the roomiest traditional mid-sized SUVs.
