The Mercury Mariner SUV is a durable and compact vehicle combining both the qualities of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a normal passenger car. The car was first introduced in 2005 and it falls in the same range or category with other SUVs like the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape. The car is the first car-based SUV product to be manufactured by Mercury and it was officially presented in about five countries which include the United States of America, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. It is stated that the production of the car has been phased out since October 2010.

Ever since the Mercury Mariner SUV was introduced into the market in 2005, it has undergone several changes over the years. The next model of the car was released in year 2008 with several changes effected, but it was still designed and built on the Ford platform like the first model. There were several changes that were effected on the new 2008 model. These changes were carried out on the seats, headlights, taillights, and a new liftgate. Also, a higher beltline, new doors and wheels were also effected in the 2008 model. The engine remained the same but the interior was also changed significantly by using materials that were higher in quality with more refined features. This 2008 model was first presented to the public at the South Florida International Auto Show in October 2006.

The next model of the Mercury Mariner SUV was the 2009 model which was unveiled to the public at the 2008 Washington Auto Show. The car had a 2.5 litre engine and the 4-speed automatic transmission found in the previous 2008 model was replaced with a 6-speed automatic transmission in the 2009 model. There was also an improvement in the engine performance when compared with previous models, as the engine power was increased from 200 horsepower to about 240 horsepower. The fuel economy of the previous model was also improved on in the new 2009 model, as it was improved by 1 mile per gallon. A few changes were also carried out and effected in the new Mercury Mariner SUV model for 2010. These changes included the use or addition of Mykey and trailer sway controls. The Euro-style turn signal repeaters for this model were removed.
