Infiniti Project Black S is a Dual Hybrid Car

The Infiniti Project Black S just made its way at the 2018 Paris Auto Show. The car is unique in a way that it features a dual hybrid system.

A Look at the Dual Hybrid System

Before we proceed further, let’s discuss what Infiniti refers to as “dual hybrid”. Actually, it is derived from the system used by Formula 1 cars.

The dual hybrid system lets the Infiniti Project Black S recover electricity when it is braking and accelerating. There is a motor generator that is dedicated to that task. It also includes two electric motors that work hand-in-hand with the V6 engine of the car to collect heat from the dual turbo system. This, in turn, allows the turbines to spin faster and reduce turbo lag. The setup adds 120 kW to the drivetrain of the auto.

Sadly, the hybrid system of the auto was not made to please the tree-huggers out there. It’s only designed to boost the performance of the car.

The resulting output of the petrol-fed engine and electric motors is 563 hp. The numbers propel the 1,776 kg car from 0 to 62 mph in less than four seconds.

The Infiniti Project Black S uses the Q60 as a base car. The special model features a custom bonnet, bumpers, wheel arches, rear diffuser, and roof. These elements make use of carbon fiber materials to optimize the vehicle’s weight. Renault F1 livery-inspired lines adorn the bumpers, rear wing rims too.

Although not visible in the photos, the rear suspension and underfloor of the car were reworked as well. Meanwhile, carbon fiber brake discs and 21-inch forged wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli tires help improve the performance of the auto.

Going inside, the Infiniti Project Black S comes with sports seats covered in black leather with yellow accents. There is also a control for the three driving modes of the car, namely the “Road”, “Quali” and “Race”.

Market Release

Those who are looking towards buying the Infiniti Project Black S in the market should not get their hopes up for now. Currently, the car is in its concept form. It is only a result of Infiniti and Renault Sport F1’s technical exercise.

Infiniti ensured that they will continue developing the car though.

Do You Want a Hybrid Porsche 911 Cayman or Boxster?

porsche 911 (1)

Porsche earlier announced that a plug-in hybrid version of the Porsche 911 is in the works. The bad news is that it will not arrive until four years into the future. So for those who own either a Porsche 911 Cayman or Boxster, they do not have to wait that long because Vonnen Performance announced that their hybrid conversion for the models will be arriving soon.

The aftermarket tuner Vonnen Performance is an off-shoot of Porsche suspension specialist Elephant Racing. They revealed to Road and Track that they are working on a system that turns the 911 Boxster or Cayman into a functioning hybrid car. The package is compatible with the 2012 to 2016 models of the said vehicles.

Vonnen aims to accomplish this by replacing the stock flywheel with an electric motor. Next, an inverter is installed on top of the engine. After that, a battery pack is mounted in the front trunk. Lastly, the company puts their very own Vonnen Control Unit (VCU) into the auto.

The VCU is plugged into the car’s engine control unit (ECU) via a Controller Area Network (CAN bus). That allows the computer of the vehicle to monitor factors like the RPM, speed and throttle input. Based on the readings, Vonnen’s computer releases energy through the crankshaft-mounted motor. Therefore, as the driver steps on the gas pedal, the hybrid motor directs power to the motor on the crankshaft to give it more rotating force.

The Vossen Performance package puts an additional 175 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque to the Porsche 911. The penalty for the power boost is a weight increase of merely 120 lbs. The minimal increase in weight despite all the upgrades is made possible by ditching the stock flywheel to make way for the company’s 38-pound motor as well as removing the starter motor because the hybrid system no longer utilizes it and taking away the 12-volt battery, which is no longer needed.

Audi R8 LMS GT3 Debuts at the Paris Auto Show

After a mysterious teaser from Audi about a car bound for the 2018 Paris Auto Show, the luxury car maker finally reveals what it is all about. The vehicle is the Audi R8 LMS GT3, which is built with racing in mind.

Audi said that the auto is “tailored closely to the customer requirements” in terms of its technology and operating costs. That means the company spent a lot of time discussing the specifications of the vehicle with automotive engineers, racing team owners and race car drivers.

The new Audi GT3 car concentrates on improving its aerodynamics and cooling. These are evident in the winglets on its bumper, extended front lip spoiler, chunky wheel arches, huge rear wing, and air ducts.

In addition, Audi tinkered with the car’s transmission to make it more durable. There is also more focus on the auto’s safety elements.

Under the hood of the Audi R8 LMS GT3 is the same 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine found in its predecessor. The unit produces 585 hp.

The new race car costs €398,000 plus VAT. However, customers who already own the older version of the car can upgrade theirs to get all the goodies offered by the new Audi R8 LMS GT3 for €28,000.

Audi is looking to deliver the first units of the R8 LMS GT3 to buyers in November this year—just in time to prepare them for the 2019 racing season in January.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan: First All-Terrain SUV From Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce rolls into the sport utility vehicle segment of the market with flair as it introduces the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The first-ever SUV of the brand definitely puts all the current premium SUVs to shame because it is not just “luxurious”, but it is “ultra-luxurious”.

The Cullinan makes use of the Phantom VIII’s platform called the “Architecture of Luxury”, so there are definitely many traces of the saloon’s design in the bigger vehicle. These can be found in the character lines, front grille, and the lighting system of the SUV. However, the Cullinan distances itself from its sibling with its shorter wheelbase, higher ride height, and slightly rugged looks.

The real highlight of Rolls-Royce cars is their ability to provide the utmost comfort to their occupants and effectively shielding them from the outside world. Of course, the ones who truly benefit from the comfort features of the vehicles are their passengers. The Cullinan follows the same treatment, but it is also equipped with a vast array of infotainment features on the dashboard in case the owner wants to take over the helm.

Opulent leather covers adorn the interior of the Cullinan. Aside from the high-end entertainment and driver assistance systems, the SUV has a cooler and whiskey glass holders. These can be further personalized depending on the whims and funds of the owner.

The Cullinan is powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine. That’s the same unit found in the Phantom, but with some tweaks. The engine produces 563 bhp with 627 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful version of the SUV is coming up that jacks up the mentioned numbers.

The other performance-focused highlights of the SUV include an off-road button, four-wheel steering system, 48-volt anti-roll system, and four-wheel drive with 50/50 split.
