Although Audi has been famous for its "quattro"4WD system since its rallying success in the 1980's, Audi is actually a relative newcomer to the SUV market. Audi only currently offers one SUV model - the Q7 (although there are other SUV models they are not marketed in North America such as the Q5). The Q7 is offered with a 3.6 V6 or a 4.2 V8; both obviously come with quattro for wheel drive as standard. All Audi vehicles exhibit that typically teutonic build quality that gives you the feel good factor before you even start the engine! Audi say this is down to their Truth In Engineering concept. The four rings badge used on all modern Audi vehicles is a symbol of four companies which amalgamated in 1932 (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer). The Audi Q7 (along with the A3, A4 and A6 saloons) earned the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick award in 2007 and 2008. Already a premium European brand, Audi has spent a lot of cash on product placement to further enhance its upmarket image. Recent examples of this are the movies "Iron Man" (Audi R8) and "The Transporter" (Audi A8) where Audi vehicles are strongly featured. Apparently Audi has also secured a starring role for one of its vehicles in the next "Transformers" movie. Audi also has a permanent fleet of luxury cars based in Hollywood ready and willing to whisk the stars around to awards ceremonies and post award parties.
