Cadillac is yet another brand owned by that automotive giant General Motors, purchased by them in 1909. Cadillac was originally named after the French explorer who founded Detroit in 1701. Cadillac sales were steadily increasing through the war years and peaked in the 1970's with record sales levels. Unfortunately this was not set to last, due to increasingly stringent government regulations on fuel economy and emissions, coupled with the fuel crisis in 73-79, the American car industry hit a slump in the 1980's. Cadillac was destined never again to equal those record years. Cadillac has the unique distinction of its name being used in the language as synonymous with "luxury" or "high spec", such as that "watch is the Cadillac of watches". The use of the name Cadillac in this way is proof of the public perception of the quality and craftsmanship of the early Cadillac vehicles. Cadillac, like most manufacturers in recent years, have moved away from their traditional vehicles (i.e. Luxury sedans and coupes) into the SUV market. Cadillac offers two models in its SUV line up - the Escalade and the SRX. The Escalade is the more conventional 7/8 seater SUV and the SRX is a smaller more modern take on the SUV theme - what the auto industry likes to refer to as a "crossover".
