Ford Edge Review

It seems obvious now that the days of the full size truck based SUV are numbered (apart from those rare circumstances where people actually need them for serious off road work or towing). Customers are changing to vehicles with SUV practicality and sedan like footprints. Ford's second foray into the "crossover utility vehicle" market is the funky, stylish Edge. The Ford Edge SE FWD uses the new Ford group platform first seen in the Mazda 6. It also shares much of the mechanicals and running gear with the Mazda CX-9, including the new V6 engine. The Ford Edge SE FWD is strictly a 5 seater with no third row of seats at present. Available in 3 trim levels - SE, SEL and SEL Plus, all models are well equipped with even the base SE model having air-conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, stability control and antilock brakes as standard. All models use the 3.5L V which produces 265HP through a new 6 speed transmission. However, even though the edge is not a full size SUV, it is a heavy vehicle so the acceleration is modest, though adequate. The ride is smooth and grip is good. However, some road testers have complained about weak brakes and according to Edmunds.com the Ford Edge posted the worst braking distances of any vehicle in its class.
