With gas prices on the rise and a growing awareness of climate change and global warming, sales of full-size SUVs have been declining over recent years. GM's answer to this is the 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid 2WD 4HY. Equipped with an all new two-mode hybrid system, the GMC Yukon Hybrid 2WD 4HY achieves 21mpg city/22mpg highway. This matches the economy of the Toyota Camry, one of the best selling sedans. The hybrid Yukon shares most of the traits of the conventional Yukon, lots of space, comfort and safety. However it does not have the same towing capacity of the conventional 6.2L model, down from 8200lbs to 6200lbs. However, this is still more than enough for all but the most serious towing jobs. The two-mode hybrid system works flawlessly using two electric motors with Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) that has four fixed gears. One of the motors is used in conjunction with the 6.0L gas engine on high demand, while the other motor is used to power the vehicle at low speeds. The electric motor can propel the Yukon up to 30 mph in complete silence on electric power alone. Of course, like all hybrids, the engine is switched off when the vehicle comes to a halt. If you spend a lot of time crawling through stop/start urban rush hour hell, the GMC Yukon Hybrid 2WD 4HY can deliver up to 40% fuel savings.
