The Hummer brand's long history as a supplier of military vehicles gives them an unsurpassed reputation for toughness and reliability. Hummer (Humvee) vehicles have been used in U.S. military action in Panama, Iraq, Somalia, the Balkans and Afghanistan. Over 175,000 Hummer vehicles have been sold to the U.S. Armed Forces and more than 50 friendly overseas nations. In 1992 civilian versions of the military Humvee started rolling out the production line for eager customers. The civilian brand was simply called Hummer as opposed to the Military Humvee (HMMWV - High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle). Since the acquisition of the Hummer brand in 1989 by GMC, the original Hummer was renamed the H1 and a more compact version was introduced in 1992 called the H2. In 2006 a smaller SUV, the H3 was launched. Hummer also produce a pick-up variant called the HUMMER H3T (which was Named Four Wheeler Magazine's Pick-up of the Year for 2009). HUMMER is one of the most recognized brands in the world; there is even a dealership in down town Baghdad! In line with their rough and durable image, Hummer vehicles are all covered by a 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Although the original Hummer H1 is no longer in production, sales of the H2 and H3 models had been increasing over recent years. However, Hummer may face an uncertain future with the current emphasis by General Motors on energy efficiency across all their product range.
