Lincoln has a long and special history as a luxury car manufacturer in the U.S. Owned by Ford since 1922 but named after the founders (Henry M. Leland) hero Abraham Lincoln. After Ford took control Lincoln became one of the top selling luxury automobiles with its long term rival Cadillac. In 1998 Lincoln was the best-selling luxury brand in the United States, mainly due to the phenomenal success of the Navigator SUV. The newest SUV model is the MKX Crossover which earned the highest possible rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in all three front and side crash tests and in the rear impact test. It was also named as "Best SUV" by Forbes.com and was 2008 Consumers' Top Rated SUV by Edmunds.com. Lincoln has recently announced the industry leading SYNC System. This system is the next generation voice activated navigation and multimedia application for vehicles. Due to the resounding success of their Lincoln MKT touring car concept in 2008 Ford have confirmed they will be producing the Lincoln MKT, a premium, three-row luxury crossover vehicle. In an era when many U.S. manufacturers are steadily losing market share Lincoln seems to holding its own, with many new models to be introduced by Lincoln (and Ford) focussing on their EcoBoost engine technology with turbo charging and direct injection.
