The Mercury Mariner I4 4X2 is a 4-door, 5-passenger sport-utility. Equipped with a 2.5L, 171 horsepower engine, it achieves 20-mpg city/28-mpg highway which are good figures for the compact SUV class. Upon first inspection, many of the changes for this new model are not immediately apparent. The reason being is that the majority of the revisions for the 2009 model, are concerned with reduction of NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). Details like thicker, noise insulating glass in wind shield and side windows, extra soundproofing materials and insulation, thicker carpets and a new roof liner, have made the new Mariner a much more refined place vehicle. An upgraded interior for the 2009 model brings the Mariner in line with its rivals. The compact dimensions make the Mariner easy to drive and manoeuvre, while offering sufficient space for a family of five plus luggage. Mercury is hoping these changes will result in a higher share of the SUV market. Currently, the Mercury Mariner only sells about 17% of the volume of the Ford Escape (on which the Mariner is based). Good refinement, car like driving characteristics and excellent economy should ensure the Mariner sells well.
