The Mercury Mountaineer (revised for 2009) is a mid sized 7 seater SUV (although the third row of seats is an option on the base model). The Mercury Mountaineer 4X2 Base has always been popular due to its low price, reasonable space, comfortable ride, and good off road capability. The Mercury Mountaineer was originally a re badged Ford Explorer, but over the years has been heavily modernised. It is equipped with a 4.0L, V6, 210-horsepower engine and 5-speed automatic transmission as standard. As you would expect, in a vehicle designed for families, there is a host of safety equipment fitted across the range including Roll Stability Control (employing a gyroscope and using the engine management system to control braking and engine power to retain control of vehicle), with front, side and curtain airbags. The Mercury Mountaineer is amongst the roomiest of the mid-sized SUVs offering accommodation and cargo space for extended families. The upgraded interior has a higher quality feel and modern dashboard. The Mercury Mountaineer offers a good compromise between luxury on road motoring and the towing abilities of a truck based vehicle. In recent customer satisfaction surveys the Mountaineer was classed as "average" but performed well in crash testing with full 5 star ratings for both front and side impact tests.
