Mitsubishi, founded by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870, initially was an engineering company specialising in the shipping industry which then diversified into cars and commercial vehicles in 1917. The name "Mitsubishi" means "three diamonds" which is the symbol displayed on Mitsubishi vehicles today. The company first appeared in the U.S.A in 1970 trading as "Colt" (although due to a controlling interest in Mitsubishi held by Chrysler the vehicles were actually sold under the Dodge brand). Mitsubishi has traditionally been known for its turbocharged sports cars; however their SUV line up is noteworthy also. The current utility vehicle line up consists of the Endeavor, Outlander and Raider. The Outlander is a compact crossover (probably the most successful type of SUV for the future) with an attractive low price tag and reassuring Japanese build quality backed up with a "bumper to bumper" warranty of 5 yrs/50,000 miles and a powertrain warranty and roadside assistance package of 10yrs/100,000 miles. Also included on new Mitsubishi models is a six-month, prepaid subscription to SIRIUS® Satellite Radio (to be used in conjunction with the Mitsubishi multi media in car entertainment system). The Outlander also earned 5-star ratings all around in frontal and side-impact crash tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
