Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Review

The latest Highlander hybrid is a vast improvement on previous versions. Although the previous model returned respectable fuel economy, the hybrid power plant was far from unobtrusive. The 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a seven passenger mid size hybrid SUV that is more refined and functional than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also grown so this latest version provides more legroom and comfort. The engine has been upgraded to a 3.3L V6 producing 270 horsepower and the electric motor drive has been refined. The continuously variable transmission provides a seamless surge of power and the 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds is exceptional for a hybrid. The suspension has been tuned for comfort and provides for a smooth ride without wallowing through corners. Like the Prius, there is an "EV" switch which allows the Highlander to be driven in electric only mode for limited distances and speed. There is also a new "Econ drive mode". This is a system that effectively prevents excessive acceleration and helps you to drive more economically. Changes between electric and gas power are now imperceptible. The Highlander is a true 7 seat vehicle and even adults will be comfortable in third row seats. The Highlander Hybrid is an exceptionally versatile vehicle that delivers 25mpg city/27mpg highway and a worthy contender for top SUV in its class.
