Toyota Land Cruiser

Review

The Toyota Landcruiser has an iconic status amongst four wheel drive fans. Perhaps the only other manufacturer with a similar status is Jeep. The Landcruiser, like Jeep, traces its roots back to a time when SUVs were judged purely on their off road capabilities. Off course over the last few decades consumers have become more interested in comfort, refinement, cup-holders and image, rather than mud plugging ability. The Landcruiser has evolved to meet consumer expectations, becoming more luxurious and refined over the years (and more expensive). However the Landcruiser still retains its off road ability and this latest generation Landcruiser is virtually unstoppable. It is powered by an advanced 5.7L V8 producing 381 horsepower and is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with permanent four wheel drive and low-range gearing with "Crawl Control" (an electronic control to maintain a fixed low speed when negotiating difficult off road conditions). No other SUV comes close to the Landcruiser with its impressive combination of off-road ability, urban refinement and durability. However, this comes at a price - at around $70k the ultimate all terrain luxury vehicle is beyond the reach of most. If you need a vehicle that can cope with extremely difficult terrain and do it in style, then the Landcruiser is the weapon of choice. However, if you rarely venture off road, then there are better (and cheaper) options.
