The Tiguan is Volkswagen's first compact SUV. This 4-door wagon is powered by a turbocharged 200HP 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. The Tiguan seats five and is available in S, SE, and SEL trim levels. All models are front-wheel drive as standard, but four-wheel drive is an option on the SE and SEL models only. A 6-speed manual is standard fit on the "S" model with 6-speed automatic transmission offered as an option. Standard safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system with front, side and curtain side airbags. The turbocharged engine provides ample power for all situations, though occasionally can suffer from some turbo lag at low engine speeds. Both transmissions are slick and smooth. The ride is firm, but not uncomfortable, and handling is precise and car like. The Tiguan is a refined vehicle, with only some wind noise at high speeds and a touch of road noise on rough surfaces. Build quality is high, particularly the perception of quality in the cabin. Storage cubbies and bins are plentiful and cargo space is more than adequate. Despite the small exterior dimensions there is plenty of room for five occupants plus luggage.
