Volvo's (Volvo Personvagnar AB) record for innovations in auto safety is unrivalled. Volvo is responsible for the first laminated windscreen, 3 point seatbelts, crumple zones, inertia reel safety belts and many others. Volvo's XC90 has recently achieved the highest safety rating in the 2007 safety awards from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The first Volvo rolled off production lines in 1927. Since then Volvo, has grown into a worldwide company with over 100,000 employees, production facilities in 19 different countries and operations in more than 180 countries. Quality, safety and environmental care have always been core values of the Volvo Group. The passenger car side of the Volvo Group was purchased by Ford Motor Co in 1999 with Volvo now having a market share of about 1% in the U.S. Volvo also has a well deserved reputation for being durable. There is even a Volvo high mileage club with the current winner being the 1966 Volvo P1800 with a documented 2.6 million miles recorded and many cars with 1 million+ miles! Volvo has also recently produced a prototype ReCharge plug-in hybrid concept car which is now undergoing extensive testing in Sweden.
