Subaru has long been thought of as an underdog in many segments, but as consumers are now looking for more fuel efficient and budget-friendly options, these vehicles are receiving the recognition they have long deserved. Just because a name may not be as popular as others does not mean that it doesn’t have just as much, if not more to offer. The 2013 Subaru SUV lineup is attractive, sporty, polished, comfortable and affordable, with a lot of little surprises you may not expect to find in a less known name.

Subaru first released Forester to the SUV market in 1997, and things would never be the same for this manufacturer. The 2013 model starts at a low MSRP of $21,295 and competes in the small crossover segment with Honda CR-V, GMC Terrain, Ford Escape and Subaru Outback.

For 2013, every Forester now comes with an iPod/USB audio interface and Bluetooth as standard features, and a new touchscreen is available. What sets Forester apart from its competition is that most small crossovers are not made for off-road driving, but this one may surprise you at what it is capable of handling. Its standard all-wheel drive system is fantastic against snow, sand, mud and smaller rocks. Forester is available in six trims, which may seem like a lot, but they differ in both features and engines.

Next is the XV Crosstrek, an all-new crossover with a super chiseled body, sure to attract a lot of attention on the road. Essentially, this is an Impreza Hatchback beefed up and given a refined suspension. This five-passenger vehicle is available in two trims. The 2.0i Premium comes nicely loaded at $21,995 with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors and seats and full power accessories. The 2.0i Limited adds leather upholstery, rearview camera and a few extras. Other options are available to add on as well, like a navigation system and sunroof.

Of course, the strongest selling point for the 2013 XV Crosstrek is fuel economy. Its spirited four-cylinder engine returns and average of 26 mpg combined. That’s something to get excited about!

The 2013 Subaru Outback will again remain a top pick among utility crossovers for those needing confident off-road performance. Outback gets a restyled front end, an upgraded CVT, more fuel efficient engine and revised suspension.

This five-passenger vehicles offers a roomy cabin, impressive towing, good fuel economy, generous cargo space and top ratings in crash tests. This is definitely one hard to pass up for $23,495, even if it does compete with more popular options, like Toyota Venza, Honda CR-V, Chevy Equinox, Volvo XC70 and Audi Allroad.

Last but certainly not least is the Subaru Tribeca, a strong contender in the midsize crossover market. Seating for seven, standard all-wheel drive and a stylish cabin makes it a worthy choice against Nissan Murano, Audi Q5 and Ford Edge.

Although Tribeca comes loaded nicely at $32,595, plenty of thoughtful features can be added, including a rear seat entertainment system, touchscreen navigation system and rear vision camera.
