Top 3 Things To Expect From The New Honda Insight
This 2018, the Honda Insight will once more rise from the ashes. It can be recalled that the Japanese hybrid was discontinued between 2006 and 2009, and again in 2014. But during the Detroit Auto Show, Honda previewed a production model of the third-generation Insight.
1. Conventional Appeal
If you can remember, the first-generation Insight was rather weird-looking. It was a three-door hatchback with hidden rear wheels. The second generation Insight was more conventional with five doors but it is this third-generation Insight that looks to appeal to the masses more. Finally, Honda went with a four-door sedan for its hybrid.
But that’s not to say that the new Honda Insight won’t be as unique as its predecessors. The revised “flying wing” grille gives the sedan a powerful and aggressive look. When it comes to the rear end, apart from the sleek fastback layout, the design is generic and conventional-looking.
2. Modern and Roomy Interior
Compared to the interior of the Insight in the previous generation, this one feels roomier and more modern and classy. There are loads of new tech, too, such as an eight-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi, and a seven-inch instrument cluster. It is also set to get the Honda LaneWatch, Honda Sensing, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
3. New Hybrid System
The new Insight will be powered by the latest hybrid technology from the Japanese automaker. The two-motor hybrid system combines the power coming from a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, an electric motor, a starter-generator, and a lithium-ion battery pack.
Estimation puts the Insight to return more than 50 mpg combined, but this figure falls between the Toyota Prius, its main competitor, which has 56 mpg, and the Hyundai Ioniq (58 mpg) and the Chevrolet Volt (46 mpg).
2018 Honda Insight Spy Shots Emerge
The third-generation Honda Insight is arriving, if spy photos of a test mule for the hatchback is to be believed. It looks like the Japanese automaker is finally ready to unveil its latest offering for the sedan segment.
Body of a Honda City
Honda has always managed to stay clear of criticisms when it comes to body styles and lines. The Insight is no different as it prepares to use the similar body of the Honda City, though adjustments are needed to fit the mechanicals of the Insight. Adjustments mean stretching and widening the body to make way for the wheel arches and extensions added to the hood and rear doors.
Plug-In Hybrid is Possible
Honda has yet to give details as to what will compose the 2018 Insight. What we know so far is based on the Clarity range of fuel cell, plug-in hybrid and electric cars in the midsize sedan segment that was launched just recently. The Clarity range is a hint that Insight will keep its odd shape—a hatchback—but will also dabble in offering electrified cars, or at least the possibility of a plug-in hybrid variant.
If Honda does take this route, it only means one thing—it’s ready to compete with the Toyota Prius in the electrified car segment. The Prius is offering both a hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The current-generation Insight, on the other hand, only delivers a hybrid version.
Based on the 2030 Vision strategy released in June by the Japanese carmaker, two-thirds of its vehicle lineup should have some form of electrification by 2030. Primarily, the focus is on the plug-in hybrid technology, although there are also plans to produce electric and fuel cell cars. Honda is set to release a new electric car this fall.
The 2018 Honda Insight will debut later this year or early next year.
