The Subaru WRX STI is getting an upgrade. Recently, the giant Japanese automaker announced the souped up version of the car in the form of the 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA.
According to a report, the Subaru WRX STI Type RA is a limited special edition model. The name “RA” means “Record Attempt”. The car features a lot of upgrades that you can find below:
1. Engine
The Type RA version of the WRX STI is packed with the same 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the standard model of the auto. The power of the unit was given a boost but it was only up to 5 hp. So from the 305 hp of the standard WRX STI, the Type RA only got 310 hp. A new cold air intake, exhaust system, modified pistons and reconfigured ECU contributed to the increase.
2. Design
The styling of the WRX STI Type RA was enhanced a bit, thanks to its new badges, red accents surrounding the front grille, mirror caps, front spoiler, antenna, hood and rear wing. Parts like the roof and rear wing made use of carbon fiber materials to significantly reduce weight.
Inside, the special edition WRX STI received Recaro seats and plaque indicating the car’s number within the 500 samples ever produced.
3. Performance
In addition to the reduced weight, the maneuverability and handling of the WRX STI Type RA was improved due to its new 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels in 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires, Brembo brakes with silver calipers, cross-drilled rotors, uprated suspension with Bilstein dampers and STI-adjusted Vehicle Dynamics Control System.
Lastly, the power distribution of the auto has been modified with its reconfigured six-speed manual gearbox matched with a short throw shifter.
