Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder Will Inherit the 911 GT3 Engine
The upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder will feature a more powerful engine. The car will receive the 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six engine found in the latest 911 GT3.
It should be noted that the current top of the line 718 Boxster carries a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. The output of the unit is 350 hp and it has a top speed of 177 mph. The zero to 60 mph acceleration of the car is at 4.3 seconds.
Replacing the engine with the 4.0-liter unit of the 911 GT3 will bump the output of the Boxster Spyder to 500 hp. However, analysts projected that the power unit of the Boxster Spyder might be detuned to produce a lower output than the more expensive 911 GT3.
The previous version of the Spyder was equipped with a 3.8-liter flat six taken from the 911 Carrera of its time. The output of the unit was at 375 hp. The latest Boxster GTS with an inline-four engine produces 366 hp. Since the 718 Boxster Spyder sits on the top of the Boxster range, it will likely have an output of 430 hp.
The car will have a six-speed manual gearbox as a standard fit. For customers looking to get most out of the auto, they can upgrade it to a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
The 718 Boxster Spyder is closely related to the Cayman GT4 of Porsche. Therefore, it is expected to get many styling elements and configuration available in the Cayman GT4, including a very prominent rear wing.
According to the interview of Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche, having a natural aspiration engine is one of the unique selling points of their cars.
2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS Get 365 HP
Porsche just expanded the lineup of its 718 Cayman and 718 Boxter range. The automaker recently revealed details about the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and the 718 Boxster GTS.
Based on the announcement of Porsche, both models had their outputs raised to 365 hp. The visuals of the cars feature a couple of enhancements too.
Performance
The 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS are equipped with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines. Thanks to upgrades in the cars’ turbochargers and new intake ducts, the GTS models of the Cayman and Boxster now boast increase in their respective outputs by 35 hp and 15 hp compared to their GTS predecessors with naturally-aspirated power units.
The maximum torque of both GTS models have also gone up to 430 Nm. This can be achieved from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm.
The power of the mid-engined sports cars are distributed via a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers have the option to go for the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission gearbox too.
The GTS models can be optimized with the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) that comes with a mechanical rear differential lock, Porsche Chrono Package, and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) lowering the height of the auto by 10 millimeters.
When equipped with all the performance-enhancing options, the 718 Cayman GTS and 718 Boxster GTS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. Then their max speed are capped at 290 km/h.
Design
The GTS models got subtle improvements in their styling to make them stand out from their lower-end siblings. The noticeable upgrades include the new bumpers, lighting system, rear diffuser, exhausts, badges and set of 20-inch alloy wheels in black satin finish. As mentioned earlier, the vehicles have lower suspensions.
Complementing the striking exterior of the cars are Alcantara accents in their interior. Then, the drivers of the car are treated to the Porsche Track Precision App that will let them monitor and analyze their driving performance through their smartphones.
Pricing
The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS has a starting price of 76,137 euros while the 718 Boxster’s cost begins at 78,160 euros. The figures already reflect the VAT and other fees in Germany.
Both cars are now available to order. The vehicles are expected to arrive in dealerships in the middle of December this year.
2017 Porsche Boxster 718 Facelifted, Has New Energy-Efficient Engine
First introduced in 1996, the 1997-2004 Porsche Boxster was an entry-level, mid-engine sports car that wasn’t warmly welcomed until enthusiasts slowly grew to love it. That was until the Cayenne SUV was launched in 2003.
Twenty years forward, the Boxster is receiving a facelift. According to sources, the Boxster will ditch the naturally-aspirated engine for turbocharged units much like the 911 Carrera. It will help reduce its emission and improve efficiency. It will also be the first Porsche sports car to use a four-cylinder engine in decades.
With these changes, the Boxster will now be called the 718 Boxster. This may be new to the Boxster, but this isn’t new to the Germans who used the nameplate for a lightweight sports car built between 1957 and 1962.
For the exterior, every panel of the new Boxster will be redesigned, except for the luggage compartment lids, the windshield, and the convertible top. Major changes include a wider front end with a new bumper section, as well as larger side intakes, mounted LED daytime running lights, reshaped center grille, Porsche’s new bi-xenon headlamps, and the optional units with four-point DRLs.
At the back, there are new taillights because of the 3D LED technology. In addition, there are four-point brake lights, a black strip with the Porsche lettering, and the 718 Boxster badge, of course.
Porsche has yet to release new details about the 718 Boxster, but it looked like it would be available in Lava Orange hue as seen on the 911 GT3 RS.
Inside, not much has changed, except that the Porsche added a standard Communication Management System featuring cell phone integration, audio interfaces, and a 110-watt Sound Package Plus.
Clients also have the option to add a navigation module with voice control, as well as the Connect Plus module for access to a wide array of online services.
The drivetrain is where Porsche made radical changes. The base 718 Boxster will have turbocharged, 2.0-liter producing 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The turbocharging will make the 718 Boxster 14 percent more efficient.
That base model can go 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds for manual and 4.7 seconds with the PDK. The 718 Boxster S will be more impressive, if that’s even possible.
The new 718 Boxster starts from $56,000, while the 718 Boxster S retails from $68,400.
