The pre-production models of the 2019 BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicles are now being rolled out. The units are being made at the Spartanburg plant of the automaker in South Carolina, USA.

According to BMW Blog, the unveiling of the new BMW X7 is scheduled at the end of 2018. With that said, the auto will bear a 2019 model year.

The X7 is BMW’s largest SUV so far. All we have are the photos of the vehicle’s camouflaged pre-production version. The wrap comes in a crisscrossing black and white striped pattern which completely creates an optical illusion hiding the body lines of the auto. However, the exposed areas indicate that it will not have the same large windows shown in its concept form. Then, the sunroof appears to stretch from the first and second row seats of the unit while the rear takes a separate glass top. The X7’s production version is expected to carry over the same dual kidney chrome radiator grille and thin headlamps found in its concept version unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany.

The X7 will be assembled on the same facility that produces the X5 and X6 SUVs of BMW. There are no details yet about the unit’s pricing and mechanical specs.

It should be noted though that the auto is still subject to minor changes on its way to its production version. What we have here is merely a pre-production model and it does not reflect the final version of the SUV, which will be rolled out to customers.

When we say “pre-production vehicles”, it means these are products made after their prototypes or development mules, which are preceded by their concept versions. These are subject for thorough testing in order to find faults before the public sale of the new model commences.

5 Things To Know About The 2017 BMW X7

We know that BMW wants to be at the top of everything, but we didn’t know they would eventually dominate the hauler segment of vehicles. The X7 is one such example. Although the production hasn’t started yet, it will surely come out ready once BMW is done with it.

While it’s likely that the X7 will debut for the 2019 model year, that doesn’t stop us from speculating what’s underneath that camouflage we saw in the spy photos. The BMW X7 was caught testing again recently under the cold weather conditions of Sweden.

1. Exterior

The X7 will be particularly similar to the X5, though it’s a bit bulkier, has a more imposing appearance, and has a proper third-row seating. It also has a more muscular looks, thanks to its larger wheels and massive kidney grille. The headlight design we saw on the X7 is the same one on the brand new 7 series. As for the bumper, it will be similar to the company’s design language.

2. Interior

Combine the X7 and the new 7 series, and you’ll get an idea of how the X7’s interior will look like. Alcantara leather will cover most of the interior that’s not made from wood or metal. It uses state-of-the-art technology, including BMW’s iDrive 5.0 touch display and gesture control. It also has the Touch Command Tablet, which will allow passengers to control HVAC temperatures, infotainment, and the audio system.

The third-row seat will be optional because buyers can choose to have more legroom and a larger trunk.

3. Drivetrain

Under the hood, nothing is so special with the X7. It will use BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six and 4.4-liter V-8. The turbo can produce 320 horsies and 330 pound-feet of torque while hitting 60 mph in less than six seconds. It has a top speed of 130 mph.

The V-8 will be able to churn out 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque to reach 60 mph in less than five seconds.

4. Prices

The X7 will probably be the most expensive of the X series. Although there is no official word yet, we’re assuming that this will retail with a starting price of $70,000. The range-topping model should exceed the $85,000 mark.

5. Competition

As for competition, the X7 is looking to battle it out with the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the Cadillac Escalade.

13 New Spy Shots of the 2019 BMW X7 Emerge

In 2014, BMW announced plans to make a full-size SUV, the platform of which we are now seeing based on these spy shots. There are no surprises with the design of the BMW X7 since there have been speculations already that it will be patterned after the German company’s next-generation X5.

Here are things you need to know about the X7 before trying to get your hands on it:

Competition

The BMW X7 will compete against full-size SUVs in the luxury arena. In this segment are the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Range Rover Long-Wheelbase, Lincoln Navigator and upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

Design

There are no surprises when it comes to the design. The X7 looks like a stretched version of the next-generation X5, though the former is more muscular on the front section. Based on the spy shots, it’s easy to see that the grille and lights are all test units. They will be replaced once advanced prototypes have been tested and released.

For the X7, the platform that would be used is the German company’s flexible CLAR, a modular platform which made its debut on the 2016 7-Series and the 2017 5-Series. This platform will be soon used on all BMW models from 3-Series and up.

The CLAR platform promises lightweight construction and compatibility with electrified powertrains. Because of this, we can now assume that the X7 will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, along with the regular V-8 and inline-6 options. A V-12 may also be offered, though expect this to only be available for the M760i M Performance trim.

Interior

The cabin of the BMW X7 will be similar to the 2016 7-Series, especially the cockpit design. It will have three rows of spacious seating, a driver-focused layout, and an advanced infotainment system with gesture control.

Production of the X7 will take place in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It will be introduced in 2018, so it will likely be a 2019 model.
